Electric Cars

An SEI layer, which contributes to internal resistance, will then be formed when a lithium-bearing electrolyte comes in contact with the electrode. A build-up of foreign materials blocks the flow of ions at the SEI layer. If you’ve been using the same battery for too long, the layer and internal resistance increase until the layer grows large enough that no ions can pass through. This is when the life of the battery ends. To maximize the lifespan of your battery, high temperature and overvoltage should be avoided.

Regular Cars

About 45 amp/hours is a standard small car battery capacity which means that it can supply over two amps for 20 hours. It should not be discharged at a higher current draw. In order to get maximum capacity out of it, it cannot be forced to deliver more amps than its amp/hour rating divided by 10. For the best service of a small car battery, it should not be asked to deliver more than about 4 amps.

You can estimate how long a battery could last if you divide a battery's amp/hour rating by its current load. Finding out if it can still live up to its car battery capacity and how much current it can deliver can be done by dividing a battery's amp/hour rating by 20. You can estimate the maximum current expected of a battery to deliver with a reasonable life expectancy before it is fully discharged by dividing the battery's amp/hour rating by four. Short-circuited car battery can deliver up to 300 amps which are very dangerous.

Understanding the Battery Capacity

The capacity of a battery can be determined by measuring the amp or AH hour and or cold cranking amps. These are the standards used by manufacturers to rate the car battery capacity and output.

The number of amps that a battery should be able to deliver at zero degrees for 30 seconds not dropping lower than 7.2 volts can be measured thru the CCA or cold cranking amps. Regardless of the car battery size, a battery needs to get a high CCA rating and the higher it is, the easier it gets the vehicle to start up in very cold weather.

The rating that is found in the deep cycle batteries is called the AH or the amp hour.
